As someone who does exactly this for membership and fundraising orgs, this is what I found to be most effective right now…
Figure out which lapsed members or donors are MOST likely to return and then CALL them. Telemarketing works and it also allows you to find out in real time why someone may not have renewed their membership or gift and also address it right away.
The person assigned to making calls should be ready to accept payment when speaking to lapsed donors or members.
I have seen this strategy work over and over again and provides the most direct impact on the bottom line. Plus the data you can gather when you speak to a member or donor on the phone can be invaluable to future outreach efforts and allows you to keep a finger on the pulse.
And especially with fall approaching and the uncertainty of what our colder months will look like, this is a great time to set up a calling program that would launch at the beginning of September.
